OPEN FIELD MAZE

The Open Field Maze (OFM) was initially developed in 1934 as a test to measure emotionality in rodents. Developed by Calvin S. Hall, the open field test is an experimental test used to assay general locomotor activity levels, anxiety, and willingness to explore in animals (usually rodents) in scientific research. It has one of the most widely used measures of behavior in animal psychology. OFM consists of a wall-enclosed area that is of sufficient height to prevent the subject from escaping and is divided into 2 zones, inner zone that spans in center and outer zone that spans towards wall of the maze. Greater time spent in the outer zones of the maze is recorded as increased thigmotaxis and is indicative of amplified anxiety-related behavior.

Calculates and analyzes parameters related to locomotor activity levels, anxiety, and willingness to explore automatically, such as the time spent in outer zones. Analyze behaviors in relation to Arm, such as the number of entries into inner and outer arms.

About VJ Instruments Open Field Maze

The VJ Instruments Open Field Maze is manufactured using high end non-reflective material and is available for rat or mouse. VJ instruments manufactures both circular and square shaped Open field maze. Walls of the square shaped maze are detachable from the base and partition options are available. Maze is available in any custom color.

The Open Field Maze comes in as a part of the whole package that includes a Licensed MazeMaster video tracking software, camera with accessories like cables fixing, IR lights, Light fixtures and a PC. Same package can be used to perform tests on a variety of other mazes manufactured by VJ Instruments like radial maze, T-Maze, Y-Maze, Morriswater maze, Barne maze, Elevated Zero Maze, Open Field Maze etc.

  • The VJ Instruments provides a complete solution to track the rodents in Open Field Maze.

The rodent is placed in center of maze is observed by a camera mounted above the open field maze. The camera is connected to a PC where in MazeMazter software is installed. The time spent and frequency of entries into inner and outer arms is recorded with VJ Instruments MazeMaster software by analyzing the video. The trajectory of the movement is provided by MazeMaster software that  can tell in which zone more movement has taken place. Other parameters that are recorded by the software are total time spent, distance travelled in open and close arm, total distance travelled etc.
